Join us for the 28th Annual Kahnawake Pow Wow Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow on July 14-15, 2018 at the Pow Wow Grounds on the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory only 10 miles south of Montreal, Canada on Tekakwitha Island. Rich in culture and tradition, the Kahnawake Pow Wow often attracts nearly 8000 people from near and far. Kahnawake Pow Wow Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow The Kahnawake Pow Wow is a great learning experience filled with a multitude or colorful sights and sounds. We encourage you to enjoy yourself and browse the numerous traditional craft booths and feast on the wide variety of native cuisine. There are over 70 kiosks featuring Native crafts, and more than 20 food booths serving buffalo burgers, walleye nuggets, mouth-watering Amerindian tacos and more. The event was originally established in 1991 as the Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow to bring people together to share in a native spiritual celebration of life through drumming, song and dance; to come together to renew old friendships and make new ones. Failure to make Grand entry will result in loss of meal tickets for that day. We will not be responaible for lost tickets and you will not receive any additional tickets. Dancers must be ready when their competition category is called. Failure to be on time or absence will result in loss of points for that session only. Stopping on time is expected. Overstepping or stopping too soon will result in loss of points. Dropping of regalia or parts of will result in loss of points for that session only. Sunglasses are not an acceptable part of your regalia. Wearing tham during inter-tribals or Grand entries and competitions will result in loss of points. ZERO TOLERANCE for alcohol and drugs. If you are under the influence you will be disqualified and escorted off the grounds. If you are camping on the site you may not return to the site after consuming alcohol. No age jumping categories. Although smoke dance and pow-wow style have separate age categories, proof of age will be required to participate in either or both. If there are less than two participants for any category there will be an exhibition dance and honorariums will be awarded equal to 2nd in that category. These dancers will still be expected to participate in Grand entry and Inter-tribals. Exhibition dances may be both days time permitting. Proof of Native ancestry is required as is proof of age. If a dancer has a problem they may approach the head judge. All final decisions made by the head judge and pow-wow committee will be final. All dancers must be in full regalia to collect prize money. No whistling up drums and no specific drum requests for your competition will be honored. Drum rotation will be left up to area director. Pow Wows, like the Kahnawake Pow Wow, offer a time for Native Americans from a variety of different tribal nations to get together and participate in visiting, singing, and dancing. It is also a chance for our non-Indian friends and families to take part in inter-tribal dancing as a Powwow is considered a cultural sharing event for all to learn about Native Americans and share ideas and information. The circle is an important symbol to Indian cultures because it symbolizes the continuation of life. To the Native American people, life is never ending, like the circle. The Powwow brings the circle of the people closer together — closer to their community and their culture. Powwows today are still very much a part of the lives of modern Indian people. The Powwow season runs from March to September or later. Competiive singing and dancing for prize money is a fairly recent change in the traditiona Powwows. Only registered contestants can participate in the dancing contests.
